Power, Piety, and Gender: Empresses in Early Byzantium, 300s-700s

SPEAKER:

Prof. Diliana N. Angelova, University of Colorado - Boulder Assistant Professor of Early Christian and Byzantine Art

Description:    This talk examines the symbolic and practical power of imperial women from the empress Helena, the mother of Constantine I, to Eirene, who uniquely titled herself "emperor." It argues that these two empresses delineate a period, in which the empress presented herself as a partner to the emperor in ruling. This partnership was manifested in the empresses' attributes (such as crowns and garments), titles and honors, as well as in their actions, such as building and generosity. By illuminating how the notion of partnership was integrated into ideas about Christian imperial rule, this talk reaches new conclusions about the intersection of piety, power, and gender in Early Byzantium.

PLACE:

Hellenic Community Center
