2010 Programs “ THE BALKAN WARS 1912-1913: THE REMAKING OF THE MAP OF THE BALKANS ” SPEAKERS AND TOPICS
DR. HELEN KATSIADAKIS “The Balkan League and the Concert of Europe: The Road to the Balkan Wars” PROFESSOR HAROLD EVJEN “The Balkan Wars: Flawed Alliances, Military Victories, Fragile Peace, and Tragic Reversal” PROFESSOR CAROL HELSTOSKY "Power Struggles in the Mediterranean: Italian Foreign Policy and the Balkan Wars" Description:
The Hellenic Cultural Association of Colorado presents a symposium on the Balkan Wars, (1912-1913), to take place on April 17, 1:00-5:00 p.m., in Sturm Hall, Room 253, at the University of Denver. The symposium will address the complex background, the individual alliances and military campaigns, and the historical results of these two wars. After centuries of Ottoman imperial control and European meddling, the Balkan States of Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, and Montenegro succeeded in expelling the Ottoman Empire from most of its Balkan provinces, but in the bitter conflict over the spoils of the war, only Greece gained stable possession of its conquests in Macedonia and Epirus. The wars and treaties did not resolve the tensions within the Balkans but did enhance the rivalries among the Great Powers. World War I soon followed
The first paper, delivered by Dr. Helen Katsiadakis of the Academy of Athens, Greece, will analyze the tangled web of events involving major Balkan states (Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Montenegro), the Ottoman Empire, and the Great Powers of Europe which led to the wars. The second paper, by Harold D. Evjen, Emeritus Professor of Classics, University of Colorado at Boulder, will focus upon the individual military goals and actions as well as the often incompatible irredentist claims which brought about the collapse of the alliances and a disastrous inter-allied war. The third paper, by Dr. Carol Helstosky, Associate Professor of History, University of Denver, will survey, using Italy as the beginning point, the historical results of these two conflicts which left few stable outcomes but many simmering unresolved antagonisms. PLACE: University of Denver Sturm Hall, Room 253 2000 E. Asbury Street Denver, Colorado |
